Score One for Room Sharing

My plan forever has been for the boys to share a room. We briefly tried it out about a year ago, but it just didn’t work yet. No big deal at the time. Well, now with number 3 on the way, they need to share a room. I figured by April I wanted Logan transitioned to the bunk bed, so that way I have plenty of time to decorate the nursery of my dreams.

A few weeks ago, Logan started visiting us in the middle of the night, saying he was scared. It really wasn’t a big deal-most of the time he just crashed out on a pallet on the floor. Then my logical husband mentioned that we may not want this to become a big time habit we have to break. I know we have 6 months until the baby is due, but I also know the longer you let something go on, the harder it is to stop it. I am sure the baby will be in our room for awhile, and I could just picture the baby waking up, Logan waking up, and the exhaustion and mayhem that would follow. So I mentioned the bunk bed to Logan. He was so excited it about it! I think the transition is actually going to work this time. We are lucky that Connor is completely exhausted by 7:30. We tuck him in, and once my hard-as-a-rock sleeper is pulling z’s, we tuck in Logan. It’s worked great so far. They wake up so happy to see each other in the morning, and even though they are waking up a bit earlier than when in separate rooms, they just get up and play together. It’s the sweetest thing!

And, moving Logan to the bunk bed has ended the middle of the night visits. It’s been 4 nights of uninterrupted sleep, and it’s been great for everyone.

It was uninterrupted, that is, until last night. Logan came in around 2:00 a.m. with the message that Connor needed me. I trudged across the living room, and stumbled into their bedroom.
“Mommy? I have a bloody nose” Connor said calmly. I turned on the hall light to get a look. Um, yeah. That was an understatement! I have no idea how he was staying that calm with that bad of a bloody nose. He was hanging over the end of the bad with his hands cupped under his nose, blood covering his face and running to his elbows. I helped him down, got him over the sink, and recruited Derek. This was definitely a two parent job! Derek got the bleeding stopped while I started the cleaning. There was blood on the walls, on the floor (a surprisingly small amount ended up on the floor!), all over the sheets, everywhere.

At 2:30, Derek and I crawled back into bed. Between 2:40 and 3:30, Logan came into our room 4 times. First, to tell me he was hungry and wanted and apple. Go back to bed, Logan. Second, to tell me he had poop. He didn’t. He had peed, and he informed me he had a pootie bootie. Go back to bed, buddy. Third, to ask Derek for an apple. Back to bed. And fourth, to tell me his quilt was wet, which it wasn’t. I finally laid down the law: sleep on my floor, sleep in a bed, whatever. But go to bed. I didn’t see him again until 8:15 this morning, so my stern mommy voice worked.

So, in conclusion (I think this really long story deserves a conclusion), sharing a room was a great thing last night. I was so proud of Connor for asking Logan to go get me instead of climbing down leaving bloody handprints on the bed and a bloody trail in his wake. I was so proud of Logan for doing what Connor had asked of him. Score one for sharing a room!

And, just because posts are always better with pictures, I thought this one was cute. Connor won that obnoxious doll at his birthday party last weekend. I thought it was so funny how Logan was spooning him and using him as a pillow.

Sad about the bloody nose. Randi ALWAYS had those as a kid – it was weird. And pretty gross. And pretty embarassing. Hope this is a random thing for Connor! 🙂 Love you so much my Roomate! XOXOXO

  3. I’m glad the sharing rooms thing is working for you. Our boys also starting waking up a little earlier as well. Oh well.
