Possible new family member

First of all, no, I am not pregnant.

On our way home from dinner tonight, I casually mentioned that I wanted to get a dog. We’ve talked about it before, like one of those things that we will do eventually. But tonight, we actually had a serious conversation about getting a dog maybe this summer sometime! There are a few really specific things we want (and by we, I mean me. Because while Derek is a-ok with getting a dog and is really more of a dog person than I am, he made it perfectly clear that he doesn’t want to be the one responsible for taking care of and training a dog.) So the specific things I want:

-Smallish. Not put-in-your-purse-small, but I am not a fan of big dogs. Big dogs=big poop. And big dogs make me nervous.
-Must be good with kids. That is a given.
-short hair is better, but this wouldn’t be a deal breaker or anything.
-Fairly cheap. Spending hundreds of dollars isn’t really in the budget. We want a rescued dog.
-Here’s the biggie. I want one that is already trained. Do those even exist, or should I just count on a lot of training?

So I am going to start researching, checking out the shelters around here, and who knows. Maybe this summer we will get a dog. Or, I could wake up tomorrow and be completely over this dog thing. That’s how I roll sometimes.

Oh, I almost forgot. I was going to see if any of you faithful, dog-loving, blog readers had any suggestions as far as breeds, what to do or not to do, just anything in general.

  1. We have a Beagle and we love him so much. He’s great with our 2 1/2 year old and is good with every kid he’s been around. He puts up with her climbing all over him and riding him like a horse. He has short hair and hardly ever sheds (we never see fur on anything except occassionally his bed). We had him house broken in 2 days and we have taught him all the basics like sit, lie down, beg, roll over, shake, etc. He even knows how to sing and say please. The bad things about owning a Beagle are they howl while outside(they are hound dogs), they tend to dig and their nose gets the best of them. CJ has to be on a leash or a dog run or he will be gone in no time at all. Overall we are very pleased with ours. He’s got the big dog personality in a smaller body.

  2. We have a 1/2 Yorkie and 1/2 Maltese dog. He was very easy to train and is absolutely great with the kids. He does have hair that has to be cut but doesn’t shed. Great overall dog. We also have a Red Heeler that is suppose to be very smart and good with kids (he is still a baby) but I think he would be bigger than what you are wanting. Good luck!

  3. If the dog is going to be inside, less hair is better…it gets old really fast! Keep grooming costs in mind if they’re gonna be indoors smaller=cheaper!

  4. I think it is really nice that you want to adopt a shelter dog. I grew up with a dachshund (wiener dog). They are smart, easy to train, little, don’t shed much, and are good with kids (assuming they were properly socialized as a puppy). On the down side, they usually end up having back problems at some point ($$$) and our dog barked a lot…not as much as a beagle or a basset hound howls, but it was still annoying sometimes. I’m sure you guys will find the perfect dog for your family!

  5. Hi, Megan! I’m Ry’s sister-in-law. First off, love your blog. You crack me up weekly! As for dogs, we have 2. One we bought for $20. She’s a mixed breed and is the best dog EVER. The other my son bought at a pet store for several hundred dollars. He’s a good dog, but more work than Dallas. Check out pics on my blog! I vote shelter dogs! (I think they are healthier too) Be careful with rescue dogs though. My mom has one that was abused and she is too fearful. They couldn’t keep her in the house, she was so bipolar! We love our 2 babies!! You will too!

  6. If you rescue a dog, you can get a trained one, but they cost a lot. At least of you use the adoption method. My parents adopted a dog about 4 years ago, and he was perfectly trained, but he cost a few hundred dollars.

  7. Yes, I agree the hair thing gets old really fast! I love my pup but I vacuum enough with just the kids around and when he sheds I wear out the carpet! Still owning a dog can be the best experience of the boys young lives. I promise.

  8. Meg, we have a miniature schnauzer. He is fabulous with the kids. He’s playful when they want to play, but he also will just lay down on the floor with them. They are hypoallergenic and you can keep their hair short or leave it long on the sides, but THEY DON’T SHED!!! I have never found one of his hairs lying around. He was absolutely the EASIEST dog to train. I have tried training several dogs before, but he was by far the easiest. He kennel trained immediately, he didn’t cry at all. He house trained within the first few days we had him. He still has an excitement accident every now and then, but that’s about it. They’re great. I hope you decide to get one. I think that your boys would LOVE it.

  9. I have a Labradoodle. This type of dog is too big for you but I do suggest anything mixed with Poodle. Poodles are so smart and don’t shed. Maybe a Maltipoo or a Cockapoo.:)
